One of traits common among all humans is that we need to reminded of what is best for us. We don’t just hear or do something once and then that’s it, it’s integrated into our being. We have to go over and over lessons – ideas, movements, or learnings – until we embody them.
The body is the merging place of all the realms of creation. When we anchor or integrate a learning in the body is when the real magic happens. And no matter how well we know this, sometimes we need a reminder.
This past week I took five days off for play and self-care and I was having a wonderful time. But on day four I started feeling a strange sadness. I woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear message from my body: it was quite unhappy about not dancing enough.
What a wake up call! I’d been walking most days and dancing a little bit, but not nearly the amount my body was crying out for. As I went deeper into my awareness I discovered that I’d been making my “work” more important than the movement that my body and soul craves.
Walking works for me as a light exercise and to connect to nature. But my soul sings when I dance! And, frankly, nothing else will do. Both structured and free form movement are important for my complete dancing needs because they each do something different for my body, mind, and soul.
The day I received the message from my body, I went to a free form dance experience. It gave my spirit a chance to reconnect to my body. In this process of reuniting, I received a brilliant answer to a question I had about business: a much better and more fully formed answer than when I had been only thinking through the question.
My body reminded me that if only my brain answers my questions I am leaving out a very important realm of creation – the physical. I must embody my wisdom even when it comes to practical business decisions.
The next day I went to a structured dance class to assist my coordination and reconnect my thinking with my body. This is vital for my mental capacity. Now I finally feel nourished on every level…body, mind, and spirit.
During this process, I discovered that I was denying my body and soul the very thing they need to thrive so that I could focus on something my mind thought was more important. Thank goodness my body and spirit clearly made my deep needs known –and that I gave myself permission to honor it.
Today, pay attention to what feeds your body and soul. Then ask yourself “What do I need to create more – soul singing and dancing – space for in my life and business?”
